Fire not only produces flames but also smoke. Smoke is a gas that contains tiny particles which can be extremely toxic – just a few breaths of the odourless gas carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide can be fatal. If the smoke is particularly thick, it also contains a large number of particles.

Some gases are not as obvious as the flames or smoke itself.

Smoke control doors are therefore a legal requirement in public buildings. But they can also be used to prevent smoke poisoning in private settings.

Requirements for smoke control doors

DIN 18095 and DIN 1634-3 detail the requirements for smoke control doors and they are classified according to EN 13501-2. As with fire protection doors, smoke control doors are subjected to a long-term functionality test as per DIN EN 1191, in which they are opened and closed 200,000 times using a closing system. Door closers according to DIN 18263 are required.

Reliable smoke control doors with steel profile systems

Smoke control doors are never completely smoke-tight. The permissible amount of leakage, however, is limited – it is based either on the length of the gap or the element as a whole.

Smoke control doors with steel profile systems provide reliable tightness, as the torsion-resistant material does not become warped. Smoke control doors made using our steel profile systems are characterised by reliable functionality and high durability.

Signs for insulated and non-insulated smoke control doors

Smoke control doors must be tested with regard to their performance properties and, in Germany, for example, they must be fitted with a non-flammable sign. In order to meet European smoke protection requirements, Jansen has had both non-insulated and insulated door systems tested for smoke protection.
