Noise has become a major societal problem, especially in urban environments and conurbations. Noise pollution caused by the dramatic increase in the amount of traffic on our roads is not only detrimental to our wellbeing, it also harms our health over the long term if the noise levels are excessively high. So-called urban canyons amplify the traffic noise, but even in less densely populated residential areas noise pollution can be significant – for example, close to major roads and motorways, railway lines and airports.


Finding and eliminating sources of noise

In many places, traffic noise is compounded by noise from playgrounds, sports facilities and restaurant terraces. This quickly makes the situation unbearable. Windows, doors and façades with high sound insulation values provide optimal protection against invasive noise of all kinds. DIN 4109 provides recommendations for the level of protection against specific types of noise pollution.

The objective measure of noise: dB (A)

Because perceptions of noise vary subjectively, what is measured is the sound pressure, which is expressed in decibels (dB), and also the frequency – in the construction industry this is typically referred to as the A-weighting. The reason for this is that very high and very low frequencies are perceived as quieter than medium frequencies. A volume of approx. 50 dB (A) is generally perceived as pleasant or "normal", and is the equivalent of muffled speech or soft radio music.


Outside noise vs. inside noise

Not all noise pollution comes from outside, though, so we specify the sound insulation levels for all our products. Because security doors, such as those in the long corridors of official buildings, have to keep out not only fire and smoke but also noise. The Janisol 2 EI30 fire protection doors, for example, are tested to 43 dB (A) and can therefore be used both as inner and outer doors.
